From Sanskrit गते (gate), the vocative singular of गति (gáti).

The term was introduced into China through the Heart Sutra:

揭諦揭諦波羅揭諦波羅揭諦菩提薩婆訶 [MSC, trad.]
揭谛揭谛波罗揭谛波罗揭谛菩提萨婆诃 [MSC, simp.]
