Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *njaŋ): semantic 氵 (“water”) + phonetic 襄 (OC *snaŋ).
Etymology 1
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-naːŋ (“heavy; thick (of liquids); viscous”); cognate with Mizo hnâng (“thick; viscous”) (Schuessler, 2007; STEDT). Coblin (1986) also compares this with Burmese နှင်း (hnang:, “dew; mist”).
