Chinese
Glyph origin
Pictogram (象形): a woman with outgrowth on her neck — a goitre. Later, a phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *qeŋʔ): semantic 疒 + phonetic 嬰 (OC *qeŋ); the 嬰 (OC *qeŋ) in turn has this character's protoform as its phonetic component, as can be seen in the bronze inscriptions.
