Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *aigasta-aika, from *aigasta (“from time”), and *aika (“time”), possibly borrowed from either Proto-Germanic *aiwaz (“long time, eternity”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂óyu ~ *h₂yéws (“long time, lifetime”), from *h₂ey- (“vital force, age”), or from earlier *ajeka and borrowed from Proto-Germanic *ajuka- (“time, eternity”); see the Proto-Finnic entry for more.
Cognate with Finnish ajastaika, Ingrian aastaika, Livonian āigast, Võro aastak, and Kukkuzi aastaika. Equivalent to ajast + aeg.
