Etymology
From a Vulgar Latin root *allongāre, from Latin longē. Other theories suggest it deriving straight from Latin ēlongāre. Compare Italian allungare, Catalan allunyar (“move away, remove, distance onself”), French éloigner, allonger, Galician alongar (“move away”), Spanish alongar and Portuguese alongar.
