Etymology

Ultimately from Proto-East Cushitic *ʕaŋ-lab (literally; "middle of cheeks"), though likely borrowed, as ʔ is not a regular reflex of *ʕ. The proto-word is a compound with the first element preserved in qangaxxa (mouthful of food) and qangar (roof of the mouth). See also Somali carrab.
