Finnish

Etymology

erä- + -(a)ta; from the same root as erota. The -k- is analogous (compare a similar analogous -k- in aueta (aukea-, aukene-) < avo- (ava-), both inspired by the weak grade of -k- in words like taata (takaa-), maata (makaa-), laueta (laukea-) and paeta (pakene-)).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈerɑtɑˣ/, [ˈe̞rɑ̝t̪ɑ̝(ʔ)]
  • Rhymes: -erɑtɑ
  • Syllabification(key): e‧ra‧ta
  • Hyphenation(key): era‧ta

Verb

erata (many forms very rare; see usage notes)

  1. (intransitive, usually defective) to diverge
    • 1642, The Holy Bible, Maccabees 6:54:
      täytyi heidän erata toinen toisistans
they were fain to disperse themselves
    • 1784, Christfrid Ganander, Uudempia Uloswalituita Satuja, 150 Satu. Waimosta, joka Hukkui:
Jotta jälkeen kuolemangin / Eukko erannut elosta
    • 1887 October 4, Hämeen Sanomat, number 79, page 3:
Hän on nyt erannut yleisistä asioista ja asuu Monroviassa...
He has now left behind daily affairs and lives in Monrovia...
    • 1914 January 17, Eteenpäin, number 12, page 3:
Erattuaan heistä noin 5 minuutin matkan päästä lähti hän asunnolleen.
Having parted ways with them after 5 minutes or so, he left to return to his apartment.

Usage notes

The forms with the weak stem era- are very rare and considered nonstandard (for instance, the Dictionary of Contemporary Finnish does not recognize their existence and therefore lists the verb under erkanee); usually only the forms with the strong grade (erka-) are used, while the other forms are supplanted from erkaantua.

Conjugation

The former is a more standard conjugation, with supplanted forms from erkaantua (marked in italic).
