Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese feixe (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin fascis, from fascio (“to bundle”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰask- (“bundle, band”). Cognate with Portuguese feixe, Spanish haz, Catalan feix, Occitan fais, French faix, Italian fascio and Romanian fascie.
