From Old Danish hælsæn, helse, from Old Norse heilsa, from Proto-Germanic *hailisǭ, cognate with Swedish hälsa. Ultimately derived from the noun *hailaz (“whole, sound”). Doublet of helse (“health”) and hilsen (“greeting”).
