From earlier ingai, from inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qiŋəʀ (“loud, unpleasant noise”). Compare Ilocano ingar (“growl”), Pangasinan ingal (“noise”), Tagalog ingay, Hanunoo ingay (“noise”), Cebuano ingog (“piercing sound”), and Malay hingar (“noise”).
