From Proto-Somaloid *koów, from Proto-East Cushitic *kaww (one). Cognate with Maay koow, Garre kow, Aweer kow, Rendille kow, Jiiddu koow, Oromo ko'oomuu (be lonely), ko'uma (loneliness), Khonso xawwaa (alone, separate), Dirasha haww. Compare also Beja kwo (unit) and Hausa kowa.
