Borrowed from French métier. Doublet of mister (employment, trade).

Inherited from Old French mestier, inherited from Vulgar Latin *misterium, a conflation of mystērium (whence French mystère) and ministerium (whence French ministère). Compare Portuguese mister, also mester, Italian mestiere, Spanish and Catalan menester.
