From Proto-Finnic *tarbis, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *þarbaz, *þarbō. Compare Swedish tarv and Gothic 𐌸𐌰𐍂𐌱𐌰 (þarba). Cognate to Finnish tarve and Votic tarvis.
