Sundsvall (saami meridional Sjädtavallie) é unha cidade sueca capital do municipio de Sundsvall, no condado de Västernorrland. Con 58 955 habitantes no ano 2019,[1] Sundsvall é a vixésimo primeira cidade máis grande de Suecia, a terceira máis grande de Norrland (tras Umeå e Gävle) e a principal cidade de Västernorrland.

Sundsvall recibiu o seu nome na carta de privilexio de 1621 polo previo pasto aberto (vall) que se atopaba ao sur do río Selångersån, que pertencía ao pobo de Sund,[2] unha poboación con catro granxeiros ao noroeste de Åkroken onde no presente se atopa a Mittuniversitetet. Nese lugar o río estreitábase formando un estreito (sund en sueco) xusto antes de desembocar na ría de Sundsvall.
