Pada musim film pertama Academy Award, 1927–28, penghargaan ini (seperti penghargaan akting) tidak terikat pada film tertentu; semua karya sinematografer selama periode kualifikasi dicantumkan setelah nama mereka. Masalah dengan sistem ini timbul pada tahun pertama, karena Karl Struss dan Charles Rosher dinominasikan untuk karya yang mereka kerjakan bersama, yaitu Sunrise. Namun, tiga film lain yang dikerjakan secara individual oleh Rosher atau Struss juga dicantumkan sebagai bagian dari nominasi. Pada tahun kedua, 1929, tidak ada nominasi sama sekali, meskipun Academy memiliki daftar film tidak resmi yang sedang dipertimbangkan oleh Dewan Juri. Pada tahun ketiga, 1930, hanya nama film yang dinominasikan, bukan sinematografer, dan juga penghargaan tidak mencantumkan nama sinematografer.
Dan akhirnya, untuk penghargaan tahun 1931, mulai diterapkan sistem di mana individu dinominasikan untuk satu film tunggal (yang juga diadopsi untuk semua kategori yang terkait dengan profesi). Dari tahun 1939 hingga 1966, kecuali tahun 1957, Academy menerapkan penghargaan terpisah untuk sinematografi berwarna dan sinematografi hitam-putih. Setelah film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), film hitam-putih terkini yang menang sejak saat itu adalah Schindler's List (1993), Roma (2018) dan Mank (2020).
