ジョージ・P・レイコフ（George P. Lakoff、1941年5月24日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の言語学者。カリフォルニア大学バークレー校教授。

来歴・人物

認知言語学の創設者の一人であり、特に、従来文章技巧の問題として言語学からは周辺的な現象として扱われてきたメタファーを、日常の言語活動に必須の認知能力（概念メタファー）として捉え直したことで有名である。

学術的活動は、1963年にロマーン・ヤーコブソンやモリス・ハレ、ノーム・チョムスキーらの言語学研究者に師事したことから始まる。当初、彼らとともに生成意味論の研究を行っていたが、チョムスキーの提唱する生成文法から離れ、認知言語学を提唱することになった^[1]。

レイコフは1980年、マーク・ジョンソンとの共著Metaphors We Live Byで、「議論は戦争である」「良いことは上である」「考えは食べ物である」などのメタファーのパターンが日常言語に溢れていることを指摘した。

レイコフはここから発展して、人間の抽象的な概念能力は、経験に基づいた具体的・身体的な認知機構からのメタファー的拡張によって可能になっていると主張し、心身二元論に基づいた西洋哲学の伝統に対する批判を行っている。

また政治問題に対しても積極的に発言している。
