Water Music er ei samling orkestersatsar, ofte rekna som tre suitar, komponert av Georg Friederich Händel. Det hadde premiere sommaren den 17. juli 1717 då kong Georg I bad om ein konsert på Themsen. Konserten vart framført av 50 musikarar på ein pram ved sidan av lystbåten til kongen. Georg I skal ha likt musikken så godt at han gav ordre til musikarane om å spele suitane om att tre gonger på turen.[1]

Alle instrumenta i barokkorkesteret vart ført ombord på prammen, bortsett frå cembaloet, sidan dette var for stort til å førast ombord.
Instrumenteringa varierer frå sats til sats, men ei komplett framføring krev fløyte, to oboar, ein fagott, to valthorn, to trompetar, strykarar og continuo. Denne instrumenteringa er effektiv for framføringar utandørs. Noko av musikken er òg bevart i manuskript frå denne tida skriven for eit mindre orkester. Denne utgåva høver for innandørs framføring, sidan lyden av strykarane ikkje ber så godt utandørs.
Water Music opnar med ein fransk ouverture og består av menuettar, bourréear og hornpiper. Han er delt inn i tre suitar:
Det finst bevis for eit noko anna arrangement, som ein finn i Friedrich Chrysander si utgåve av dei komplette verka til Händel (Georg Friedrich Händels Werke, Bind 47, publisert i 1886), der satsane i «suitane» i D og G er blanda saman. Denne rekkefølgja kjem frå den første utgåva til Samuel Arnold i 1788 og kopiar av manuskripta som er datert frå levetida til Händel. Utgåva til Chrysander inneheld òg ei tidlegare utgåva av dei første to satsane i HWV 349 i F-dur, komponert i 1715 og opphavleg instrumentert for to naturhorn, to oboar, fagott, strykarar og continuo. I tillegg til horn-fanfarane og svara til orkesteret, inneheld originalutgåva utførlege concerto-liknande fiolin-delar, som ikkje finst i den seinare utgåva.[2]
Musikken i kvar av suitane har ikkje ei fast orden i dag. Då suiten vart spelt for kongen, vart dei sakte, rolege delane spelt når båten til kongen og båten til orkesteret låg nær kvarandre, medan dei meir livlege partia vart spelt når båtane låg lenger frå kvarandre.
I følgje segna skal Händel ha komponert Water Music for å få att velviljen hos kong Georg I. Händel hadde vorte tilsett av den framtidige kongen før kongen tok over den britiske trona, medan han var kurfyrste i Hannover. Komponisten vart upopulær hos kongen då han flytta til London i regjeringstida til dronning Anne. Denne soga vert først fortalt av den tidlege Händel-biografen John Mainwaring, og sjølv om det kan vere noko sanning i det, trekkjer andre Händel-ekspertar denne historia i tvil.
Ei anna segn fortel at kurfyrsten av Hannover godkjende at Händel flytte til London, sidan han visste at dei ville kome saman att seinare. Begge var visstnok klar ovr at kurfyrsten av Hannover etter kvart ville ta over den britiske trona etter dronning Anne døydde.[3]
Mange delar av Water Music har vorte kjende. Mellom 1959 og 1988 var ein sats frå Water Music kjenningsmelodien for for Anglia Television. D-dur-satsen i 3/2 takt, kalla «Alla Hornpipe» er særleg kjend og har vorte nytta mykje på fjernsyn og i radioreklamar. «Air» og «Bourrée» frå F-dur-suiten har òg vorte særs populær.
Allegro i D vart nytta under ein scene i filmen Dead Poets Society frå 1989, med Robin Williams og Ethan Hawke.
