O Catholic-Hierarchy.org (em português: Hierarquia Católica) é um banco de dados online sobre os bispos e dioceses da Igreja Católica Romana e Igrejas católicas orientais. O site não é oficialmente sancionado pela Igreja, mas sim executado como um projeto privado de David M. Cheney em Kansas City, nos Estados Unidos.^[2][3]

Origem e conteúdo

Na década de 1990, David M. Cheney criou um site simples na Internet que documentava os bispos católicos romanos em seu estado natal do Texas – muitos dos quais não tinham páginas na web. Em 2002, depois de se mudar para o Meio-Oeste, ele criou oficialmente o website, expandindo-o para cobrir a Igreja Católica nos Estados Unidos e, eventualmente, o mundo.^[3] O banco de dados contém informações geográficas, organizacionais e de endereço de cada diocese católica do mundo, incluindo das Igrejas católicas orientais em plena comunhão com a Santa Sé, como a Igreja Católica Maronita e a Igreja Siro-Malabar.

Também fornece informações biográficas sobre os bispos atuais e anteriores de cada diocese, como as datas de nascimento, de ordenação e (quando aplicável) da morte.^[4]

Status

O site é citado como referência pela Rádio Vaticano,^[5] assim como por numerosas dioceses espalhadas por todo o mundo,^[6][7][8] instituições acadêmicas,^{[9][10][11][12]} bibliotecas,^[13][14][15] jornais (inclusive os da mídia secular)^{[16][17][18][19][20]} e católicas),^[21] e publicações acadêmicas.^[22] o vaticanologista Sandro Magister o lista como um site recomendado acerca do catolicismo.^[23] Também utilizado como referência por escritores de outras igrejas, como John L. Allen, Jr.,^[24] o canonista Edward N. Peters,^[25] e Rocco Palmo.^[26] A Agência Zenit afirma que a página oferece um "serviço silencioso e único à Igreja".^[27]

Fontes do site

Entre as fontes estão as publicações impressas da Santa Sé: o Anuário Pontifício, a Acta Apostolicae Sedis e a Acta Sanctae Sedis. Estudos históricos de autores cujos sobrenomes variam de Andrade a Zúñíga também são utilizados.^[28]

O Serviço de Informação do Vaticano fornece notícias sobre mudanças que afetam dioceses e bispos. Outra fonte primária de informações para a nomeação de bispos, biografias e eventuais renúncias, tem sido o arquivo da Santa Sé Daily Bulletin, dada pela Sala de Imprensa da Santa Sé,^[29] e as publicação mensal chamada Acta Sanctae Sedis (sobre membros da Cúria Romana ou dos núncios apostólicos.).^[30]
