Etimologie

Din engleza medie horse, hors, care provine din engleza veche hors („cal”) < proto-germanică *hrussą („cal”).

Înrudit cu scoțiană joasă hors, friziană (de nord) hors, friziană (de vest) hoars, neerlandeză ros, germană Ross, suedeză russ, islandeză hross, latină currus și galeză car. Confer și hurry.
