Etimologie

Din engleză medie povre, povere, care provine din franceză veche (și anglo-normandă) povre, poure (astăzi pauvre) < latină pauper, din forma veche *pavo-pars („care devine mic”). Provine din proto-indo-europeană *ph₁w- („puținătate, micime”). Înrudit cu engleză veche fēawa („mic, puțin”).

Înlocuise termenii nativi în engleză medie earm, arm („sărac”), wantsum, wantsome („sărac, nevoiaș”) și unlede („sărac”).
