Cintorín založili namiesto pôvodného staroondrejského cintorína (Cintorín svätého Ondreja), ktorý bol v tom čase už preplnený.[1] Tento starý cintorín sa nachádzal na Heydukovej a Hollého ulici v Bratislave.[9][1]
V roku 1966 bolo na ňom evidovaných 15 000 náhrobkov.[1] V časoch socializmu, teda po roku 1948, však cintorín začal postupne chátrať.[1][10] V rokoch 1976 – 1980 sa uskutočnila rekonštrukcia cintorína, ktorej cieľom bolo premeniť cintorín na mestský park, no mala skôr negatívny dopad. Pri tejto rekonštrukcii sa zmenšil počet náhrobných kameňov a krýpt (mnohé z nich boli zničené, vrátane ich podzemných častí), bol čiastočne zbúraný obvodový múr a na niektorých miestach bol nahradený betónovým múrom, na ktorom sa nachádzajú zamrežované otvory. Rekonštrukcia sa dotkla aj rastlinstva na cintoríne – mnohé stromy a okrasné dreviny boli spílené. Následkom týchto úprav bolo to, že na cintorín prenikal väčšmi dopravný hluk.[1][10]
Architektonické prevedenie jednotlivých hrobov, krýpt a náhrobkov je odlišné. Časť z nich bola postavená v štýle novorenesancie, časť v štýle novogotiky a tiež tu nájdeme aj klasicistické prvky.[1]
Na cintoríne je pochovaných veľa významných ľudí – nachádzajú sa tu hroby a krypty šľachtických rodov a mešťanov, predstaviteľov vrchnosti mesta, svetských aj duchovných predstaviteľov, obyvateľov mesta, vojenských veliteľov a uhorských dôstojníkov, rôznych známych osobností mesta a tiež hodnostárov monarchie.[1]
