Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greek letter sorority for African American college students.[1] It was founded at Howard University in 1908.[1]

  1. Chapter started as a mixed collegiate and graduate chapter. In April 1949, the graduates split off to form the Epsilon Epsilon Omega chapter and Gamma became a collegiate chapter.
  2. This was formed as both a collegiate and graduate chapter. In 1930, the graduates split off and formed the Rho Omega chapter. Some collegiate members split off to form the Beta Mu chapter at Detroit City College (now Wayne State University) in 1936. In 1949, the charter for Xi was transferred to Michigan Normal Teachers College (now Eastern Michigan University) and the chapter closed.
  3. Chapter was originally a mixed collegiate and graduate chapter at, serving Fisk University and Meharry Medical College. In 1927, the graduates formed Alpha Delta Omega chapter, leaving Pi chapter for the undergraduates at Fisk.
  4. Chapter was formed to serve members from Western Reserve University, Oberlin College, and Cleveland College.

  1. Chapter started as the Women's College Club and was briefly chartered as the Eta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in December 1917. Its name was changed in 1922 when the national fraternity decided graduate chapters would have Omega as the last letter of their names. The name Eta was reissued to a collegiate chapter.
  2. Chapter was formed as the Lambda chapter (graduate) but was changed to Beta Omega in 1922 when the national fraternity decided graduate chapters would have Omega as the last letter of their names. The name Lambda was reissued to a collegiate chapter.
  3. Chapter was formed as the Mu chapter (graduate) but was changed to Gamma Omega in 1922 when the national fraternity decided graduate chapters would have Omega as the last letter of their names. The name Mu was reissued to a collegiate chapter.
