Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *qoː) and ideogrammic compound (會意 / 会意): phonetic 區 (OC *qoː, *kʰo, “vessel”) + semantic 瓦 (“pottery”).
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *qəw (“pot; vat; jar”). Related to 椀 (OC *qoːnʔ), 碗 (OC *qoːnʔ, “bowl”), and possibly 甕 (OC *qoːŋs, “urn”). Compare Burmese အိုး (ui:, “pot”) (Schuessler, 2007).
