Etymology

Schuessler (2007) suggests a relation to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *na (ill, pain, sore, ache, difficult, evil spirit), whence (OC nâi) "to expel demons of illness" (Analects), (OC nân) "hard, difficult", Tibetan (na, to be sick, ill), ནད (nad, disease, suffering), སྣད་པ (snad pa, to hurt, harm, injure), Burmese နာ (na, to suffer pain, to be ill), နတ် (nat, nat (spirit), evil spirit), and reconstructs as nhaʔ (though with uncertainty). 's possible relation to *na functions as evidence for reconstructing initial n- for (OC nhaʔ) in the same phonetic series.

STEDT, however, does not count among *na's Chinese comparanda along with (OC *n̥ʰaːn, *naːns) and (OC *nɯːs).
