Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *repidäk. Cognate with Estonian rebima, Ingrian reppiä, Karelian repie, Livonian revitä, Ludian rebitä, Veps rebita, Võro räbimä and Votic repiä. Also related to Northern Sami rahpat (to open) and possibly to riipiä. Possibly of imitative origin, compare to Proto-Indo-European *h₁reyp-.
