Etymology 1

According to Aikio (2020), possibly from Proto-Finnic *satu, derived from an unattested verb *sate- + -u, related to Southern Sami soetedh (to tell something frightening) and Southern Sami soete (frightening story). Alternatively, possibly an obscure derivation from sattua; alternatively derived from sataa, in which case the original meaning was "fall" and the semantic development would be comparable to that of German Fall (case) (< fallen (to fall)).
