Elle est créée en 1915 sous le nom de Fox Film par William Fox, et fusionne ensuite avec Twentieth Century Pictures, créée en 1933 par Darryl F. Zanuck (un ancien producteur de Warner Brothers) et Joseph Schenck, l'ancien président de United Artists. Le siège du studio hollywoodien, Fox Studios, est situé à Century City, un quartier de Los Angeles à l'ouest de Beverly Hills, en Californie et jouxte un studio de production nommé Fox Studios.

Produit par 20th Century Fox, Avatar reste à ce jour le plus grand succès cinématographique au box-office mondial[3].

Elle est depuis le 20 mars 2019 une filiale de la Walt Disney Company. L'année suivante, la société est renommée 20th Century Studios.
