Etimologia / Derivazione

• sostantivo: uccello

dal medio inglese brid, a sua volta dall'anglosassone brid o bridd con il significato di "pulcino" o "piccolo uccello", la cui origine a sua volta è incerta. Si è ipotizzata una connessione con il verbo breed "nutrire" ma l'ipotesi resta tutt'altro che verificata. Il termine anglosassone per uccello, "fugol" (imparentato con il tedesco Vogel e olandese vogel) ha invece subito uno slittamento semantico passando a indicare una determinata categoria di volatili, cfr. inglese fowl, "pollame". La forma brid è stata la più diffusa fino al 1470 circa ma la sua variante con metatesi (bird) è attestata già dal 1419 nei dialetti nord-inglesi.
