Orycteropus afer est fodiens et nocturna mammalium species magnitudinis mediae, quae in Africa endemica est.[1][2] Sola species exstans familiae Orycteropodidarum atque adeo ordinis Tubulidentatorum est,[3][4] quamquam praehistoricae huius ordinis species et genera in litteris scientificis describuntur. Aliorum insectivororum dissimilis, eius rostrum est longum et suiforme, quo victum olfacit. Per plurimum ex duabus tertiis continentis Africanae partibus vagatur, regiones autem saxosas vitans. Formicis isopterisque nocte vescitur, quae ex eorum parvis collibus unguibus acutis cruribusque validis effodit. Etiam latibula in solo effodit, ubi se tegit et pullos alit. Ad afrotheria pertinet, cladum taxinomicum qui etiam elephantos, manatos, hyracoidea, afrosoricida comprehendit.
Speciei sunt septendecim subspecies descriptae, quamquam non bene definitae.[3]
