രാജാധിപത്യങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും സ്വാധീനം ചെലുത്തിയിരുന്നതും ഏറ്റവും അധികം പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ വ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നതുമായ ഒന്നാണ് റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യം. 1741 മുതൽ 1917-ലെ ഒരാഴ്ച മാത്രം നീണ്ട ഫെബ്രുവരി വിപ്ലവത്തിൽ തൂത്തെറിയപ്പെടുന്നതുവരെ ഈ ഭരണസംവിധാനം നിലനിന്നു.[6] മൂന്നു ഭൂഖണ്ഡങ്ങളിലായി വ്യാപിച്ച റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ സ്ഥലവിസ്തൃതിയുടെ സ്ഥാനം ബ്രിട്ടീഷ്, മംഗോളിയൻ രാജവംശങ്ങളുടെ വ്യാപനമേഖലയ്ക്ക് തൊട്ടുതാഴെയായിരുന്നു.സ്വീഡിഷ്, ഒട്ടോമൻ, പേർഷ്യൻ, പോളിഷ്-ലിത്വാനിയൻ രാജഭരണങ്ങളുടെ തകർച്ചയും റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വളർച്ചയ്ക്ക് ആക്കം കൂട്ടി.
