ഗൊസ്സീപിയം

സപുഷ്പികളിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു സസ്യകുടുംബമായ മാൽവേസിയിലെ ഒരു ജീനസ്സാണ് ഗൊസ്സീപിയം (Gossypium). ഇതിനെ പരുത്തി-ജീനസ് എന്നും വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. പഴയതും പുതിയതുമായ ലോകത്തിന്റെ ഉഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും മിതോഷ്ണമേഖലാ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലുമാണ് ഇവ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ ജീനസ്സിൽ ഏകദേശം 50 സ്പീഷിസുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.^[2] മൃദുലമായ പദാർത്ഥം എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന ഗോസ് (goz) എന്ന അറബി വാക്കിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഗൊസ്സീപിയം എന്ന പദം ഉണ്ടായത്.^[3]
