David Nelson

David Nelson (fødd 12. juni 1943) er ein USA-amerikansk musikar, songar og låtskrivar.^[1] Han er kanskje mest kjend for å ha vore med å skipe New Riders of the Purple Sage, der han var medlem i mange år.^[2]

Career

Nelson byrja som vise- og bluegrassmusikar, mellom anna som medlem av The Wildwood Boys i lag med Jerry Garcia. Kort tid etter venen og kollegaen byrja å spele rock med The Warlocks (som sidan skifta namn til Grateful Dead), vart Nelson med i eit liknande band kalla New Delhi River Band.

I 1969 vart Nelson henta inn som ny sologitarist i Big Brother and the Holding Company. Før gruppa fekk ein erstattar for Janis Joplin, inviterte Garcia og John «Marmaduke» Dawson med seg Nelson som sologitarist i det nye psykedeliske countryrockbandet sitt, New Riders of the Purple Sage.^[3] Etter å ha spelt med New Riders frå 1969 til 1982, slutta Nelson i bandet for å gjere andre ting. Mellom anna spelte han på Broadway som medlem av Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band og stundom turnerte han med Al Rapone and the Zydeco Express.

I midten av 1990-åra skipa Nelson si eiga gruppe, David Nelson Band (eller DNB), i lag med Bill Laymon (New Riders, Jefferson Starship, Harmony Grits, Gypsy Cowboy Band) på bass, Barry Sless (Cowboy Jazz, Phil Lesh and Friends, Kingfish) på solo- og pedalsteelgitar, Michael «Mookie» Siegel (Kingfish, Phil Lesh and Friends, Kettle Joe's Psychedelic Swamp Revue) på klaverinstrument og trekkspel og Arthur Steinhorn (Cowboy Jazz) på trommer.^[4]

Nelson var med å starte opp att The New Riders of the Purple Sage i 2005. I tillegg til NRPS, har Nelson halde fram å spele med David Nelson Band, i tillegg til The Papermill Creek Rounders, ei bluegrassgruppe han var med å skipe i lag med venen Lowell «Banana» Levenger (tidlegare i The Youngbloods).

I tillegg arbeidet i sine eigne band, har Nelson spelt som gjesteartist på innspelingar for mange andre artistar, inkludert tre Grateful Dead-album: Aoxomoxoa, Workingman's Dead og American Beauty.
