Lough Corrib (irsk: Loch Coirib)[1] er en innsjø (lough/loch) i provisen Connacht vest i Irland. Elven Corrib knytter innsjøen sammen med havet ved Galway. Innsjøen består av to deler, et mindre og grunt basseng i sør, og et større og dypere basseng mot nord, forbundet med et smalt sund. Den ligger for det meste i grevskapet Galway og et lite område i det nordøstlige hjørnet i grevskap Mayo. Innsjøen er 176 km² stor og er den nest største innsjøen på øya Irland etter Lough Neagh.
Den første kanalen på øya Irland ble gravd ut på 1100-tallet. Kanalen var kjent som Friar's Cut, og gjorde det mulig for båter å passere fra Lough Corrib til havet ved Galway.[2] Lough Corrib ble utpekt til et Ramsarområde 16. juni 1996i henhold til Ramsar-konvensjonen om bevaring av våtmarker.[3] Det har også blitt utpekt av EU som et spesielt viktig verneområde.
Det irske navnet Loch Coirib er en korrupsjon av Loch Oirbsean.[4] Ifølge stedsnavnkunnskap refererer dette til Oirbsen eller Oirbsiu, et annet navn for Manannán mac Lir, en sjøgud i irsk mytologi, og som var knyttet en mytologisk stamme eller folk ved navn Tuatha Dé Danann («stammen til gudinnen Danu). På irsk har innsjøen også blitt kalt eller har vært omtalt som An Choirib («the Corrib»).[5][6]
Det har blitt gjort undersøkelser siden 2007 av en lokal landmåler/kartograf for å lage oppdaterte kart over Lough Corrib.[7] Disse har avdekket en rekke gjenstander av historisk betydning, som har blitt undersøkt av enheten for undervannsarkeologi ved Irlands National Monuments Service.[8] Funnene består av rester av båter eller kanoer (stokkebåt) fra bronsealderen og jernalderen, særskilt «Annaghkeen-båten» fra sen neolittisk tid (bondesteinalderen) eller tidlig bronsealder, som er hele 12 meter lang og intrikat utskåret,[9] «Carrowmoreknock-båten», et godt bevart fartøy fra 1000-tallet som frakter tre norrøne stridsøkser fra vikingtiden,[10] og vraket av en viktoriansk lystyacht. Innsjøen er derfor av internasjonal betydning som et marinarkeologisk område.[11][12] Alle historiske vrak i innsjøen er beskyttet, og det kreves en særegen lisens for å dykke vannet fra National Monuments Service.[13]
Dyrelivet i Lough Corrib omfatter flere fuglearter, foruten oter, mink, røyskatt, frosker og flaggermus.[14] Lough Corrib kan deles i to deler: et mindre grunnere basseng i sør og et større dypere basseng i nord. Disse to delene er forbundet med en smal kanal. I den sørlige og østlige delen av innsjøen er innsjøbunnen dominert av kalkberggrunn dekket av forekomster av mergel. Landet rundt er for det meste pastoral jordbruksland i sør og øst og myr i vest og nord. De mest synlige artene er tamme sauer i opplandet og storfe på slettene i øst. I tillegg til innsjøgrunnlaget er enkelte områder av vitenskapelig interesse som grenser til innsjøen, eksempelvis skog, gressmark og nedbørsmyr har blitt innlemmet i spesialområdet for bevaring.[15][16]
Mens Lough Corrib er kjent for å ha 365 øyer, er en fersk tall fra kartundersøkelsene over innsjøen hele 1327, store og små.[17] Disse øyene omfatter Inchagoil Island, midt mellom Cong og Oughterard. Det er en av de største av de skogkledde øyene langs Lough Corrib. Øya har utsikt over Maumturk-området, Joyce Country og fjellene i Connemara. Det er noen strender og skoger med turer rundt på øya. Det er bevis på en tidlig klosterbosetning, og to kirker: en kirke dedikert den hellige Patrick og en annen kirke fra 1100-tallet kjent som «helgenkirken». Den hellige Brendan sjøfareren av Clonfert skal også ha tilbrakt litt tid på en øy i denne innsjøen etter at han kom tilbake fra sine reiser i de britiske øyer. Det er flere stier rundt på øya, en gammel kirkegård og rester av fire eller fem hytter som huset de få innbyggerne.
