Emmanuel Levinas (Kovno, 12. 1. 1906. – Pariz, 30. 12. 1995), francuski filozof, teolog, judaist, autor i profesor litvansko-jevrejskog porijekla.

Biografija

Levinas je rođen 1906. u ruskom gradu Kovnu (danas Kaunas u Litvaniji) i tokom Prvog svjetskog rata zajedno s porodicom odselio se u Harkov. U Ukrajini su živjeli do 1920. godine i potom se vratili natrag. Nakon završenog srednjeg obrazovanja 1923. emigrirao je u Francusku koja mu je dala državljanstvo tokom 1930-ih godina. Živio je u Strasbourgu i zajedno s prijateljem Mauriceom Blanchotom pohađao studij filozofije na gradskom univerzitetu. Tokom 1928. i 1929. odlazi na seminar fenomenologije na Univerzitet u Freiburgu gdje su mu predavali Edmund Husserl i Martin Heidegger.

Nakon studijskog boravka 1930. dovršava doktorsku disertaciju pod naslovom Teorija intuicije u Husserlovoj fenomenologiji (francuski: ), koja predstavlja prvi prvi veći rad o fenomenologiji u Francuskoj. Levinas se u ovom djelu priklanja Heideggeru i to zbog nehistorijskog karaktera Husserlove fenomenologije. Usprkos kasnijem oštrom protivljenju Heideggerovoj filozofiji, uvijek je tvrdio da Bitak i vrijeme spada među najljepše filozofske knjige.

Godine 1932. oženio se s Raïssom Levi koju je poznavao još od djetinjstva. Do Drugog svjetskog rata objavio je filozofsku analizu hitlerizma (francuski: ), eksperimentalni esej O bijegu (francuski: ) na temu hermeneutičke ontologije, te nekoliko manje značajnih djela. Nakon što je Francuska objavila rat Njemačkoj, Levinas je regrutiran u armiju i tokom vojnih operacija zarobljen je i odveden u radni logor kod Fallingbostela. Njegova žena i kćer Simone preživjeli su rat skrivajući se u samostanu blizu Orléansa, dok mu je veći dio litvanske porodice stradao u Holokaustu.

Nakon rata radio je kao profesor na Univerzitetu u Poitiersu, Parizu i Fribourgu, a obnašao je i poziciju direktora Visoke jevrejske orijentalne škole (École normale israélite orientale) u Parizu. Godine 1961. izdao je knjigu Totalitet i beskonačno (francuski: ), prvo kapitalno djelo o filozofiji, a kroz narednih dvadesetak godina objavio je i dvije važne studije Talmuda. Druga značajnija filozofska djela su mu S one strane bitka ili događa se drugačije od bitka (francuski: , 1974) i Etika i beskonačno (francuski: , 1982).

U svojim djelima Levinas radikalno kritizira cjelokupnu tradicionalnu metafiziku kao ontologiju, čiji vrhunac vidi u Heideggerovoj filozofiji. Metafizika u tradicionalnom smislu za njega nije ništa drugo nego metafizika imanencije, odnosno učinila je svijet, bližnjeg i Boga pukim korelatima svijesti, duha ili bitka kao takvog. Levinas stoga pokušava razgraditi tu sveutemeljujuću novovjekovnu subjektivnost jer ona u potpunosti ukida transcendenciju i onom Drugom ne ostavlja nikakvu mogućnost slobode. Ovo radikaliziranje pitanja o "nedodirljivom Drugom" postaje centralnim problemom cjelokupne Levinasove filozofije.
