Alpha Phi Alpha is an international fraternity established at Cornell University in 1906 as the first intercollegiate fraternity for African American men.[1] As of 2023, Alpha Phi Alpha has chartered 979 chapters; 686 chapters are active in the United States and the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands.[2]

  1. This chapter formeded as the Philadelphia Citywide chapter. However, the collegiate side of the chapter merged with other collegiate chapters, leaving Rho Alumni chapter.
  2. This chapter was chartered as a mixed chapter, serving both graduate and undergraduates from Atlanta University and Morehouse College. In 1924, Alpha Rho was created for the undergraduates at Morehouse.
  3. Chapter was formed in Prairie View, with meetings rotating between Prairie View and Houston. After the establishment of Epsilon Tau Lambda chapter in 1952 in Hempstead, near Prairie View, Alpha Eta Lambda relocated to Houston.
  4. Chapter was re-established as Sigma Alpha Lambda.
