A vice president is a standalone office existing for deputizing or replacing a president. In other countries where the vice presidency is absent or vacant, a separate office or series of offices may instead be designated ex officio to act as head of state, for example the speaker of a legislature or a head of government.

7. Just like the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected among nine Malay rulers once every five years. However, this position is not term-limited.
8. An alternative acting president may be designated by the Prime Minister of Malta.
9. The Secretary of the Interior may only serve as acting head of state until an Interim President is appointed by Congress.
