Chinese
Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *sŋra): semantic 木 + abbreviated phonetic 疏 (OC *sŋra, *sŋras).
Etymology 1
Traditionally thought to be related to 疏 (OC *sŋra, “distant; sparse”), as compared to 篦 (OC *piː, *bis, “fine-tooth comb”) (Shiming; Wang, 1982).
However, Schuessler (2007) considers this to be folk etymology and instead proposes that this is related to Tibetan གཤོད (gshod, “to comb”), Proto-Kuki-Chin *hriat (“to comb; to brush”). STEDT provisionally reconstructs Proto-Tibeto-Burman *g-s-y(w)at (“to comb; to brush”) and also notes possible connection to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m-si-t (“comb; rake”).
