Glyph origin

Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *keːd, *kʰeːd): semantic (metal; gold) + phonetic (OC *kʰeːds, *kʰeːd, *kʰeːd, *kʰɯd).

Etymology

Schuessler (2007) relates (OC *kʰeːds, *kʰeːd, *kʰeːd, *kʰɯd, “notch”) and tentatively compares (“to engrave”), (OC *kʰreːd, *kraːd, *r'aːb), though proposes no cognates outside of Sinitic. STEDT connects Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-krjat (to scratch, scrape), whence Burmese ခြစ် (hkrac, to scrape, shred).

Pronunciation

Note:
  • koeh/keh/keeh - vernacular;
  • khiat - literary.
