Chinese
Glyph origin
Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *keːd, *kʰeːd): semantic 金 (“metal; gold”) + phonetic 契 (OC *kʰeːds, *kʰeːd, *kʰeːd, *kʰɯd).
Etymology
Schuessler (2007) relates 契 (OC *kʰeːds, *kʰeːd, *kʰeːd, *kʰɯd, “notch”) and tentatively compares 㓞 (“to engrave”), 擖 (OC *kʰreːd, *kraːd, *r'aːb), though proposes no cognates outside of Sinitic. STEDT connects Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-krjat (“to scratch, scrape”), whence Burmese ခြစ် (hkrac, “to scrape, shred”).
