From Proto-Finnic *ostadak (compare Estonian ostma), derived from Proto-Finno-Ugric *wosa (compare Komi-Zyrian вуз (vuz, tax)) with -taa; in turn, the root might possibly be borrowed from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wasaH.
