Аму Дарја (персиски: آمودریا таџички: Амударё; туркменски: Amyderýa; (паштунски: د آمو سيند, да Аму Синд; кинески: 阿姆河, пинјин: Āmǔ hé); арапски: جيحون, Џихон/Џајхун; хебрејски: גּוֹזָן, Гозан, узбечки: Amudaryo, „Окс“ (старогрчки: Ὦξος; латински: Oxus) — важна река во Средна Азија, која настанува како спој од реките Вахш и Панџ. Во антиката ја исцртувала границата помеѓу Аријана и Туран.[2]

Реката има вкупна должина од 2.400 км, со сливна површина од 534.739 км2. Средниот истек изнесува 97,4 км2 годишно[1]. Пловна е во должина од преку 1.450 км. Сета вода доаѓа од високите планини на југ, каде просечните атмосферски врнежи надминуваат 1.000 мм, со тоа што дел од таа количина се губи во испаренија пред да дојде до водните површини.
За извор на реката се смета ледник во венецот Памир, кој потоа истекува како поток и продолжува во реката Ваха, па 50 км низводно ѝ се приклучува на реката Памир.[3]
Реката Панџ ја образува границата помеѓу Авганистан и Таџикистан. Тече западно од Ишкашим, каде свртува на север, па на северозапад, низ Памир, минувајќи под Мостот на таџикистанско-авганистанското пријателство. Потоа течението оди долж авганистанско-узбекистанската граница во должина од 200 км, минувајќи ги Термез и Мостот на авганистанско-узбекистанското пријателство. Во следните 100 км тече по авганистанско-туркменистанската граница, па влегува во Туркменистан кај Атамурат. Сега, како Аму Дарја тече низ Туркменистан во правец југ-север, минувајќи низ градот Туркменабат, и од Халкабат ја исцртува туркменистанско-узбекистанската граница. Потоа се разделува на поголем број водотеци во речната делта на некогашниот брег на Аралското Езеро, минувајќи низ Ургенч, Дашогуз и други градови. Поради големата загуба на вода во езерото, делтата не стасува до водата, туку се губи во пустината. Ова се должи претежно на неодговорната експлоатација на водата за наводнување во последните неколку децении.
Во подалечното минато реката се влевала и во Каспиското Море.
Околу 1.385.045 км2 припаѓа на непроточниот слив на Аралското Езеро, опфаќајќи голем дел од Таџикистан, југозападниот агол на Киргистан, североисточниот агол на Авганистан, долг тесен дел во источен Туркменистан и околу половина Узбекистан. Дел вододелницата во Таџикистан ја образува границата со Кина (на исток) и Пакистан (на југ). Околу 61% од сливот се наоѓа во Тазикистан, Узбенистан и Туркменистан, додека на Авганистан му припаѓаат 39%.[4] Од вкупното сливно подрачје, само 200.000 км2 играат активна улога во снабдувањето на реката.[5] Ова се должи на фактот што многу од поголемите притоки (особено Зеравшан) се пренасочени во посебни корита за стопански цели, па така Аму Дарја денес тече претежно низ пустински и степски предели.
Во антиката, Аму Дарја (наречена Окс) претставувала граница помеѓу Аријана и Туран.[2] Поречието на Аму Дарја е дел од двете големи царства на стариот век: Монголското Царство на Џингис Кан и Македонското царство на Александар III Македонски. Една јужна траса на Патот на свилата делумно одела крај реката на северозапад од Термез, пред да скршне на запад кон Каспиското Море.
Првите населби на подрачјето на Аму Дарја и Узбој се основани во V век, кога по течението се намножиле обработливи предели, села и градови. Коритото е уредено во 985 г. кај делницата на големата брана Гурганџ, уништена од војската на Џингис Кан во 1221 г. Браната ја делела водата подеднакво на главниот дел на Аму Дарја и течението на Узбој.[6] Но во XVIII век, реката повторно свртувала на север и истекувала во Аралското Езеро, што го прави и денес. Со текот на вековите Узбој добивал сè помалку вода. Во 1720-тите ракавот наполно секнал.[7]
