  1. Includes the population of the India-administered union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
  2. Refers to mainland China; excludes China's special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, which returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
  3. Includes the 50 states and the District of Columbia, but excludes the territories of the United States.
