This is a list of present-day cities by the time period over which they have been continuously inhabited as a city. The age claims listed are generally disputed. Differences in opinion can result from different definitions of "city" as well as "continuous habitation" and historical evidence is often disputed. Caveats (and sources) to the validity of each claim are discussed in the "Notes" column.

It was granted city status in 1863.The port city's history can be traced back even further, to the 4th century BC. During the 9th to 15th centuries, it was known as "SHETGANG" by early European Chittagong was renamed Islamabad during the Mughal era, the name was later reverted back to Chittagong. The city has been known by various names throughout history, including Chatigaon, Chatigam, Chattagrama, Chattala, and Chaityabhumi 1581 to 1666, Chattogram was completely ruled under the control of Arakan kings. However, the Portuguese pirates continued to disturb common people very much during this period. The king of Arakan suppressed the Portuguese in 1603 and 1607 with a strong hand.Chittagong was an important port city in the Kingdom of Mrauk U, after Arakan's independence from the Bengal Sultanate. The Burmese tradition of the city's etymology, is that an Arakanese king, invading in the 9th century, gave the city the name Tsit-ta-gung (စစ်တကောင်း; war's (spear) head / limit of conquest).

  1. It is salient to the discussion of continuous habitation that Cortés's initial founding of Veracruz was symbolic, rather than because he was actually establishing a permanent settlement. Founding a town allowed Cortés and his men to portray the land as not part of the Caribbean, thereby removing them from under the authority of the governor of Cuba, Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. Velázquez had revoked permission for the expedition before Cortés departed Cuba.[46]
