Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *brenʔ): phonetic (OC *prenʔ, *brenʔ) + semantic (say). However, the phonetic component (which is the reduplication of the Kangxi radical of the knife to mark prisoners) perhaps symbolizes two prisoners accusing each other, hence "debating in an aggressive manner".
