Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *praːwɢ): semantic (horse) + phonetic (OC *ɢraːw). The phonetic component adds part of the meaning if interpreted as "marks".

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *prawk (piebald) (Schuessler, 2007, STEDT under PTB *bruk); cognate with Burmese ပြောက် (prauk, spotted, speckled), Jingpho prúʔ, Mru preu (of mixed colors). Another Chinese cognate may be (OC *praːn).

(OC *preːwɢs, “leopard”) is its exopassive derivative, literally meaning, “the spotted one”.

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “The other senses are not obviously connected to the "variegated" sense, in particular, the "rebut" sense (which is the most prevalent sense in Sino-Xenic), though Schuessler makes no mention of them. Do these other senses derive from semantic extensions that originate in compound words which originally invoked the "variegated" sense? For example, 駁船 (OC *praːwɢ ɦljon) would be a "piebald boat" > "barge", and 反駁 (OC *panʔ/pʰan praːwɢ) would be something like "to go against the piebald (mixed)", perhaps evoking semantics which parallel English go against the grain.”
