Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *-kka, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *-kka (compare Erzya -ка (-ka), Hungarian -ka).

Suffix

-kka (front vowel harmony variant -kkä, linguistic notation -kkA)

  1. Forms diminutive nouns.
  2. Forms some adjectives, primarily with a diminutive meaning.

Usage notes

  • (adjectival suffix): In free variation with -akka. The form -kka is most often used with adjectives ending in -kea, in which the ending is replaced wholesale with -kka (like in synkeä synkkä). The variation -kea ~ -kka goes back to Proto-Finnic.
