Shuowen: Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *neːŋ): phonetic (OC *neːŋ) + semantic (speech (?)).

Note that the simplified form (zhù) is also a traditional character on its own.

Etymology 1

Either related to Burmese ညင်း (nyang:, soft, gentle, quiet) or connected to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s/k-niŋ (heart, mind, brain) (Schuessler, 2007)
