Phono-semantic compound (形聲 / 形声, OC *kuːl, *kʰuːlʔ): semantic (human) + phonetic (OC *kulʔ).

Etymology 1

(OC *kuːl, *kʰuːlʔ) "extraordinary" (Zhouli) > (OC *kuːl, *ɡuːl) "rare, marvelous" > a kind precious stone" (Shijing).

(OC *kûi) seemingly had the same OC rhyme as (OC *kwrêh; *kwêh); they may be merely variants (Schuessler, 2007).
