Finnish

Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *-ntadak, possibly even from Proto-Uralic *-mta-, but in any case equal to -(e)n(e)- + -taa (the causative form of -eta, with which the stem-final vowel change is shared).

Suffix

-ntaa (front vowel harmony variant -ntää, stem -nta-, linguistic notation -ntA- or -ntAA)

  1. Forms factitive verbs from adjectives and names of languages, meaning "causing to become" or "making"; -en, -fy
pieni (small) + -ntaapienentää (to shrink)
paksu (thick) + -ntaapaksuntaa (to thicken)
suuri (large) + -ntaasuurentaa (to magnify)
englanti (English) + -ntaaenglannintaa (to translate into English)

Usage notes

The suffix is added to the genitive singular (weak grade) stem. A preceding stem-final -a-, -ä- changes to -e- (see -eta for more on this change), except in some newer derivations, such as kuvantaa and kustantaa.
