From Middle Chinese 宰 (MC tsojX). Recorded as Middle Korean ᄌᆡ〯 (cǒy) (Yale: cǒy) in Hunmong Jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527.
Pronunciation

- Phonetic hangul: [재(ː)/제(ː)]
