-ból/-ből (elative case suffix)

  1. (from inside an enclosed space) from, out of (question word: honnan? (from where?))
    Kiszabadultak a fogságból.They were released from captivity.
    A gyerekek kiszaladtak a házból.The children ran out of the house.
  2. (originating at) from
    Ez a kézirat az 1980-as évekből származik.This manuscript is from the 1980s.
  3. The end of some situation or condition.
    Felépültek a betegségükből.They have recovered from their illness.
  4. In some adverbs.
    hasból (off the top of one's head)
    egyből (immediately, at once, right away)
    igazából (really, actually)
    nagyjából (roughly, by and large, on the whole)
    újból (again, once again, anew)
  5. In some postpositions.
    jóvoltából (thanks/due to)
    alkalmából (on the occasion of)

Usage notes

  • (elative case suffix) Variants:
    -ból is added to back-vowel words. Final -a changes to -á-.
    alma (apple)Kifogytunk az almából.We ran out of apples.
    -ből is added to front-vowel words. Final -e changes to -é-.
    zene (music)Kifogytunk a zenéből.We ran out of music.
  • Dialectal variants: -bó/-bő, -bú/-bű, -bul/-bül.
